Our Christmas Look for 2021

This Christmas, we worked with stylist Hannah Franklin on our festive Style Pod.  Our brief was to create a Christmas dining scheme celebrating natural materials, craftsmanship and the elemental beauty of wood, a place to come together and create memories with family and friends.

With an increasing focus on sustainability, we asked Hannah to include ideas which could be easily adapted for celebrations throughout the year. Much like our furniture designs, we believe in enduring, timeless decorating choices, with the aim of repurposing and reusing wherever possible.  We also suggested a focus on fellow British brands, with lighting supplied by Original BTC, textiles from Tori Murphy, paint by Little Greene, glassware from LSA International and eco-friendly crackers by Nancy & Betty, who plant a tree for every box of crackers sold.

One of the biggest changes we’ve seen at ercol is the move away from matching furniture sets, with more and more homeowners mixing not only collections but also wood finishes.  A big fan of the Scandi aesthetic, Hannah chose a selection of our most pared-back designs for the Style Pod, mixing dark and light wood finishes to create a warm, layered look.

The centrepiece of Hannah’s scheme is our clean-lined Corso table, matched with our informal and family-friendly Corso bench. With the hope that this Christmas we will be with our loved ones, an extra seat for additional guests is a most welcome touch! Joining the Corso bench are a pair of Lugo dining chairs, with their sweeping arms and upholstered seat adding an extra layer of hygge.

Hannah’s decorating touches are designed to mirror the simple beauty of natural wood, with plenty of foraged foliage layered with sparkling fairy lights.  We love her choice of brown, foil-free wrapping paper, which is easily recyclable and can be used for gifting throughout the year, avoiding unnecessary waste.  We’re also very much on board with Hannah’s suggestion of a winter canvas, rather than a tree – it’s not only more eco, but a great choice for smaller homes.  Placed behind our Siena sideboard, this lovely scene by Surface View creates the perfect backdrop for a festive display.

Of course, it wouldn’t be an ercol Christmas without a cosy armchair to relax in once dinner is over.  Whether you’re having a snooze, listening to the Queen’s speech or watching the Strictly special, our mid-century-inspired Aldbury does the job perfectly.
