A Season of Change

This autumn sees our range expanding with the launch of several entirely new designs, and further updates and additions to some of our longest-established and most enduringly popular collections.

This September we launched the new Ballard sofa collection, with serpentine springs for additional comfort

Launching a brand-new ercol collection is always a big moment for us. It represents the culmination of months, sometimes years of work, from turning the initial concept into a finished design, identifying appropriate materials and craft techniques, making prototypes, developing production methods, to ensuring our people have the right skills and equipment to make it on a commercial scale. 

It’s a significant event for our customers and retailers, too. Naturally, they want something new and different to anything they’ve seen from us before; but they also want it to be intrinsically, recognisably and unmistakeably ‘ercol’, with the features, design cues, materials and finishes they know and love. It’s a tricky line to walk, but we’ve been doing it for 70 years, successfully navigating the need to remain relevant and contemporary while sticking to our principles and never simply following fashion.

All that thinking and experience comes together in our new Ballard collection. The legs, shaped from solid ash, tapering outwards and finished in our Vintage OG stain, are classic ercol; but the range itself, notably the modular pieces, is completely in tune with contemporary spaces and lifestyles. 

The Heritage large extending dining table can seat up to 8 people

It’s a similar story with the new Small and Large Dining Tables we’ve created to complement our Heritage chairs – another ercol design that can trace its origins back to the 1950s and our founder, Lucian Ercolani. Here again, you can see the influence of a mid-century icon, in this case the famous ‘333’ chair, faithfully translated into new products. Both the new tables are extendable, with the Large able to seat eight people comfortably.

There are also two new tables in our Highmoor collection, with new Coffee and Side Tables joining the popular Dining Table. The ercol design language is immediately evident in the clean, organic lines, soft curves and the tops’ chamfered edges. The sculpted circles in the legs of the new tables are formed through a beautiful blend of traditional craft and modern production techniques: the solid ash timber is precision cut by a CNC machine, then sanded and polished by hand. Keen observers will also discern the influences in the underframe from another ercol classic, the Windsor table. 

The Tenon dining collection is made from solid Oak and Oak veneers

For centuries, furniture-makers have used tenon joints, in which a projecting tongue cut into one piece of wood (the tenon) fits snugly into a matching slot (the mortise) cut into another, to provide strength and longevity. That time-honoured technique gives its name to our Tenon collection, made from solid oak and Oak veneers, with the joints intentionally left visible as a design detail on pieces including the shelving unit and sideboard.

The Bronte is available in a static or recliner option

For our craftspeople, integrating traditional techniques with modern technology is part science, part art – a balance that finds elegant expression in our Bronte collection. The recliner, for example, has classic ercol H-frame legs in solid ash that fit snugly into the upholstery; hidden within the head and footrests are separate powered mechanisms each with its own charging outlet: a touch of the ‘Home’ button returns the chair to its upright position.
