Calm & Confident: Pantone’s 2020 Colour of the Year

After much anticipation, Pantone has announced its 2020 Colour of the Year. Their first pick of the new decade is Classic Blue. Above all else, this beautiful tone combines elegance and tranquillity with much-needed stability and resilience as we enter the start of a new era. But it’s also a wonderful continuation from the jewel colours of 2019.

In this post, we’ll explore what that means for design but also what it means for you – and how to incorporate this enduring blue hue into your home.

What is Pantone’s Colour of the Year?

Classic Blue isn’t just a furniture trend. Nor is it an impulse pick. Each year, the experts at the Pantone Colour Institute study a spectrum of influences from entertainment, art, travel and design. They look at the newest technologies, materials and textures and consider socioeconomics, social media trends and even major events like the Olympics that can impact the global perspective.

The result is a colour that influences design, development and purchasing across an array of sectors. From fashion and home furnishings to industrial design, graphic design and even product packaging, Pantone’s Colour of the Year truly leads the way.

Daring to go deeper

Last year, we saw a mix of delicate colours counterbalanced by pops of deep jewel shades. Bright yellows and deep greens slowly crept into our décor throughout the home. As a result, upholstery moved away from beige soft furnishings and brown leather.

In 2020, Classic Blue is taking that one step further. We’re becoming more daring, using a brighter palette to rework every room in the home. The Bellaria Snuggler is the perfect example, bringing in the blue hues of Pantone’s Colour of the Year, paired with stunning dark wood legs.

Bold or subtle?

If you want to go even bolder, you can redecorate a whole room using different tones of your chosen colour. Dark blue walls and shelves work in harmony with the Cosenza upholstery Collection.  Here shown on the armchair and footstool, it is paired with splashes of blue on the rug, which is all offset by the natural turned oak legs and wood flooring for a truly striking room set.

Of course, you don’t have to go big – and it doesn’t have to be the living room. With its calm, connecting undertones, Classic Blue is an excellent choice for the bedroom. Redecorating a feature wall, accentuated by a matching bold throw, can have a big impact. Our Bosco bedroom furniture is the ideal accompaniment, with its exposed finger joints, it highlights the natural matt finish of the oak bed.  This collection is available with a wardrobe, bedside cabinet and chest of drawers and the pale oak matches this blue’s stability perfectly.
