The late 2010s have been dominated by Scandi design, with an emphasis on simplicity, clean lines and muted colours. Central to that trend is the use of lighter woods such as ash, beech and pine on floors, furniture and even walls.

However, with 2020 just around the corner, dark woods are making a stunning return. Whether it’s the darker elements of tulipwood or a bold finish on darkened ash, they offer a delightful way to refresh your home in time for the New Year – and the new decade.

In the bedroom

With light, pastel colours still a firm favourite in homes, dark woods are the perfect way to add a bit of contrast and depth. The Bosco bedroom collection is now available in dark tulipwood as well as pale oak, adding another dimension to light, airy bedrooms.

The dark tulipwood bed frame can be matched with other feature pieces such as the five-drawer wide chest, to give your bedroom character and warmth. This chest has five deep drawers, providing plenty of storage and has elegant finger joint detail on the corners and drawer fronts, that is offset perfectly by blush pink fabrics like a curtain or bed throw.

Complementing dark wood

Being a natural product wood is extremely versatile and combines beautifully with other materials. Using darker wood finishes means you can play with a whole new world of fabrics and metals. As well as lightened ash, the Verso sideboard is available in a dark finish, which is complemented beautifully by a brushed brass backing plate, behind the handle of the door.

Alternatively, the Forli sofa is a perfect addition to any living space with solid legs in a dark or pale oak. Using darker wood, it can pair with metal features like a striking lamp or subtle side table.

Dining with dark wood

While Scandi design as a whole is still on trend, the more Nordic ideals are certainly beginning to emerge. The Lugo collection takes its inspiration from mid-century Nordic design, with beauty, simplicity and functionality at its core.

From the modern dining table and chairs to the shelving unit and sideboard, Lugo highlights expert craftsmanship with scalloped handles, exposed tenon joints and tapered legs. It is finished with a matt lacquer for an understated, contemporary look.
