Ercol are delighted to have been awarded the The Design Guild Mark Award for the Svelto Stacking Stool.

An award for excellence in British Furniture Design was introduced by ‘The Furniture Makers Company’ to reward excellence in the design of furniture. It marks and rewards the work of the finest designers working in Britain and the best of British designers working abroad.

The Svelto Stacking Stool, designed by Lisa Sandall of the ercol Design Studio is made from oak and finished in a Dead Matt lacquer showing the beauty of the natural timber.

Lisa said “It is a huge honour to be awarded a Design Guild Mark. There have been so many fantastic winners in previous years - it makes me very proud that the Svelto round stacking stool has been considered worthy of this recognition. At Ercol everything we produce is a collaborative team effort. As a concept designer I work very closely with our team of technical designers and craftspeople on the factory floor to ensure the products we produce are done so as efficiently as possible, without compromising on the elegance of the design. The Svelto round stacking stool exemplifies this; it is made from only 3 component parts, and all the legs assemblies are common, all meeting at the centre of the stool in a specifically designed joint.

The Svelto range was Ercol’s first capsule collection designed specifically with the international market in mind. The products had to be recognisably ercol in terms of their craftsmanship and softness of detail, but had to be forward looking and trend led.

After a successful launch in 2013, the round stacking stools were added as additions to the collection in 2014. The design of the stool had to work within the constraints of the features from the existing collection, and to the specification that they must stack. The resulting stool stacks infinitely in an elegant spiral; making them an ideal innovation in response to the UK’s shrinking homes. Simultaneously the stool strengthens Ercol’s offering to the contract market, as they are an ideal seating solution for multipurpose venues.”
