ercol exhibits in Japan November saw ercol taking part in two exhibitions in Tokyo, through our partner in Japan, Daniel. IFFT or “interiorlifestyle living” show is Japan’s premier trade show for the furniture and interiors products market. This is held in the wonderfully named “Tokyo Big Sight” exhibition centre. Daniel mounted a display of ercol, with pieces from our Originals collection and the treviso desk, by Matthew Hilton. Also in November and coinciding with the Tokyo Design Week, Daniel took over the foyer of the Shinjuku Park Tower, to mount a pop-up display of ercol. The Shinjuku Park is a 57 storey block – the top 20 or so floors are the Hyatt Park Tower Hotel which was the setting for the film “Lost in Translation”. It is also home to the Ozone – The Tokyo Design Centre, where Daniel have a permanent display of ercol.

ercol at Pod Food

Pod Food is a rapidly expanding fast food chain, currently focused on London. They put great emphasis on healthy eating, ethical sourcing and the environment. Their ingredients sourcing embraces fairtrade, local sourcing, sustainable fishing and seasonality. Pod are unusual in using compostable packaging made from plant matter and they have a composter in every pod. This attitude is also embraced in the building of every pod, including the use of recycled materials and (here we come in) the use of British furniture. ercol were delighted to work with architects Waugh Thistleton and Pod to provide our stacking chair for their new restaurant, located in Shoreditch, just off the Old Street tube roundabout in the ground floor of a prestigious new apartment complex. ercol supplied the stacking chairs in clear finish, white painted finish and in a special green painted finish to match the Pod corporate colours.

ercol’s chiltern wins award
Selected by a panel of expert judges, the House Beautiful Awards 2011, covered a broad spectrum of home related categories.  We were delighted to receive the Gold Award for “Best Storage” with our chiltern display cabinet.  The award was accepted on behalf of ercol by our chairman, Edward Tadros at the awards night presentation.
Chiltern was developed exclusively for John Lewis and takes inspiration from some of our cherished designs from the 1950s, updated for today.  The chiltern display cabinet is a very striking piece – with an open back with an unusual lattice effect from crossed lists – inspired by the crossed lists on the back of the dining chair, but writ large.  This signature motif for the range is continued in the love seat back and also to form the undershelf on the coffee and lamp table.

ercol at Maggies Centre, Nottingham Maggies have recently opened a new cancer care centre in Nottingham. Design has been at the heart of providing a welcoming and uplifting oasis for those suffering from cancer. The stunning new centre comprises four interlocking ovals, elevated about the ground and clad in green glazed tiles. It was designed by architect Piers Gough CBE, founding partner at CZWG Architects. Working in harmony with the building is an interior designed by Nottingham-born fashion designer Sir Paul Smith. Sir Paul commented “I am delighted to be involved in creating this centre for people living with cancer and their family and friends. It will be a great resource for everyone and a fantastic new addition to the city.” ercol were delighted to have our furniture selected as part of the interior scheme, including our butterfly chair in aqua finish, treviso desk by Matthew Hilton and chiltern chairs for John Lewis.

John Bercow nominates ercol
MP for Buckingham and Speaker of the House of Commons, John Bercow, visited ercol on Friday 11th November.  He spent several hours having the full tour of the works, seeing all the stages involved in making a piece of ercol furniture – from machining, timber bending and fabric cutting, to assembly and polishing.
Mr Bercow has also nominated ercol for the “Made in Britain” project by the Associate Parliamentary Manufacturing Group – each MP has been asked to highlight one company within their constituency that showcases UK manufacturing.  The Associate Parliamentary Manufacturing Group exists to encourage the exchange of knowledge and understanding between Parliament and the manufacturing industries and to raise the profile of manufacturing both inside and outside of Parliament.  Three cheers to that!

new ercol fabrics. Every year our design team visit the major fabric trade shows to seek out the best of that year’s new fabric offerings.  October sees us launch our new season fabrics into our collection.  They include a wide range of palettes, from bright vibrant reds to more muted greens and browns.  Geometric patterns include stripes and herringbones, whilst the trend for elements from nature continues with a number of florals.  Perhaps the most eye-catching of these is the Sanderson’s dandelion clocks, with its funky 50’s retro design featuring stylised dandelion heads with seeds radiating from a central point and printed in four off-beat colour combinations.  This design is ideal to add a splash of colour through your scatter cushions or an individual chair.

We have also added two new leather colours to our range  - a rich cognac and, very aptly for the season, conker.

You can download the new fabric catalogue from the catalogue page of our website.

ercol – coming soon to Ealing. ercol furniture are delighted to welcome Brentham Interiors of Ealing as a new ercol stockist from November.

Brenthams, like ercol, is a family run business.  They were established in 1938, just before the outbreak of WWII. During the war the store was used as a storage facility for RAF plane parts and engines, which may have been used in operations from RAF Northolt.  In 1946 the furniture industry in the UK slowly began to recover after the War and Brenthams embraced this by offering a selection of furniture from the top brands of the day.

Today Brentham’s is a third-generation family business, run by Danny Fellingham and his very experienced team, enabling them to offer great service, experience and knowledge.  The launch of the ercol display in November is a very exciting development and we look forward to welcoming Brenthams as an ercol stockist.

new ravenna recliner Our ravenna upholstery range has proved very popular since its launch last year.  This autumn sees us add a recliner chair to the range.  Deep comfortable cushioning gives perfect support for complete relaxation, whilst you can chose from a manual, or for the ultimate indulgence, an electric version.  The recliner has been designed to recline from the front, so it doesn’t extend over the rear of the chair, unlike some – this means you can still place the chair close to the wall, saving on valuable space.
The ravenna recliner is available in our choice of over a hundred different fabrics or a range of leathers, or we can even make it in your own fabric.  The solid ash legs are available in a choice of six timber finishes.

ercol paints a vision for the kitchen Our latest dining range, the pinto collection, has been designed to suit modern living and dining requirements.  Today the kitchen is the hub of socialising in the home, with people favouring an open environment that combines kitchen, dining and casual seating areas for a relaxed, homely vibe.  Pinto adds style and practicality to any kitchen-diner, whatever the space.  Keep it simple with table and chairs from the pinto range and for larger rooms add dressers and sideboards for that extra design touch, coupled with practical storage.

Pinto’s classic country style look is enhanced by the striking contrast between painted elm juxtaposed with natural oak.  Table and cabinet tops are made from oak, with a clear matt lacquer, showing off the natural grain of the wood, whilst legs and cabinetry come in painted elm in a choice of three soft matt colours – pebble, coffee and sage.
Pinto offers two chair designs – a more casual spindle back dining chair or a fully upholstered chair.

new artisan pieces We’ve added two new pieces to our popular artisan range of living and dining furniture.  Both pieces show the characteristic curves of artisan.  The new 2253 artisan bookcase is a tall piece with adjustable shelves and, unusually, a drawer at mid-height for easy to access additional storage.  The new 2218 artisan corner TV unit is ideal for making use of the space in room corners.  It features the ercol IR magic eye, which enables you to use your normal remote control for your digibox or DVD player through the closed wooden doors – avoiding an unsightly array of electrical equipment and helping keep it all dust free.

ercol at Stirling Castle. Completing the double with Edinburgh Castle, where we supplied our stacking chair for both its restaurants, we recently provided our 392 stacking chair in our rich, dark TR (traditional) finish for the Unicorn Café at Stirling Castle.
The Castle traces its turbulent history back through over 900 years. The Unicorn Café, which takes its name from the many statues and images of unicorns around the Castle, combines a bright and modern servery with an atmospheric seating area with whitewashed and natural old stone walls. It even has a rooftop patio, from which you can get stunning views of the surrounding countryside whilst enjoying their traditional Scottish cuisine. For more images visit our Flickr site.

the Triangle is a new development of affordable eco-friendly homes by Kevin McCloud’s company Hab Oakus and housing group GreenSquare.  The houses use carefully considered design and materials to make the homes cheap to run whilst keeping the build costs around those of a standard building.
Lifestyle is also an important part of the Triangle, with shared green spaces, “kitchen gardens” for growing food and a car pool. Of course, good furniture is an important part of lifestyle and ercol were delighted to be asked to furnish No. 38 The Triangle.  We chose our ravenna upholstery, artisan oak dining collection, treviso desk by designer Matthew Hilton and a range of our Originals.

ercol at Edinburgh Castle. ercol were delighted to work with Historic Scotland, Benugo and Path Design to provide the seating for Edinburgh Castle’s Queen Anne Restaurant and Red Coat Cafe. ercol’s stacking chair in the rich, dark TR (traditional) finish was selected for this project. The Red Coat Cafe provides a break for coffee & cake or more substantial refreshment part-way up the climb up the castle slope, just off the Middle Ward. Then, when you reach the highest area of the Castle, at Crown Square, there's a further chance for refreshment at the Queen Anne Restaurant, with waiter-service and traditional Scottish fayre, prepared and produced from local ingredients in the Castle kitchens. So next time you visit Edinburgh Castle, why not take a rest on an ercol chair whilst soaking up the historic surroundings?

New chiltern pieces for John Lewis. Following the success of the chiltern dining range, designed exclusively for John Lewis, we're adding five new pieces to the collection. The chiltern range was inspired by ercol's mid-century archive, reinterpreted for today. The new editions similarly take inspiration from some of our classic designs, whilst taking the distinctive "criss-cross" pattern of the lists on the chiltern chair as a design motif across the range. As well as the bench (pictured), there is a new display cabinet, lamp and coffee tables and a triple table nest. Available from selected John Lewis stores from end of January 2011 and on the John Lewis website.

Nick Garratt, who has been with ercol since 2005, moves from Head of Sales and Operations to become Managing Director, whilst Ian Peers has been appointed to the board as Operations Director, having also worked at ercol since 2005, most recently as Production Manager.

Donna will be doing two special versions of our 355 Studio Couch for Tent London, one based on her printed fabrics and another with chunky knitted covers.

Young fabric designer Sarah-Jayne Guest had reupholstered an old ercol chair in her own fabrics for One Year On, part of this year’s New Designers show. Sarah-Jayne studied Printed Textiles at Loughborough University. For Tent London, we will be showing our Windsor chair in black with seat pads made from her fabrics.

Both pieces are available in three options: natural lacquered oak or a choice of white or black lacquered ash & beech.  Chiltern is available exclusively from John Lewis, through their stores and website.

Studio couch returns! Since we relaunched a small selection of classic pieces from our back catalogue as our Originals range a few years ago, we've had lots of requests to re-release our 355 studio couch. Well, we've listened and are delighted to reintroduce this iconic piece in this, our 90th year.
The studio couch was designed by the company's founder, Lucian Ercolani, and was originally launched in the late 1950s. As well as looking great, the studio couch was highly functional, designed to act both as a large sofa and an occasional bed. Featuring characteristic steam bent arms the studio couch is made from solid elm and beech in our Buckinghamshire factory and is available in a choice of over a hundred different fabrics.

BA Contemporary Furniture Design project ercol has long worked closely with Bucks New University, and for a number of years we’ve set a project for the BA course. This year we set a brief for the students to design a piece of furniture that could be used as storage in the bedroom. The judging panel chose a lean-to dressing table with a sliding top that moves to reveal storage underneath, designed by Phil Procter. This winning design was then hand crafted by ercol’s prototype makers.

Phil derived his idea from “the monolithic and cumbersome storage that we so often surround ourselves within our bedrooms. The aim for the project was to somehow lighten up and calm the atmosphere of the bedroom by designing furniture which emphasised and celebrated its negative space, without compromising the object's usual functions.” You can see more images of Phil’s pieces being made on our Flickr site.

Camphill Communities. Recently we supplied furniture to two of the Camphill Communities. Camphill is an international charity supporting children and adults with learning disabilities, mental health problems and other special needs. It does this through a network of communities both urban and rural, which provide a caring, supportive and stimulating environment. Each centre aims to provide opportunities for personal growth, fulfilling work, friendship and social interaction, education and training.

Botton, near Whitby, has grown to become the largest Camphill community. Its farm provides work both on the farm itself and in its dairy, food centre and bakery, with products available in the village store & coffee bar. Its workshops make a variety of goods including wooden toys, dolls, candles, woven and printed items.

Glencraig Community is located on a beautiful estate sloping down to Belfast Lough. Founded in 1954, today it encompasses around 200 people, with 19 houses, a school and workshops, with the farm at its heart. Glencraig’s school and training college caters for children and young people from 6-19 years and provides adult education. In addition forty adults with learning difficulties live in the community’s houses, sharing their lives with their co-workers and families.

90th anniversary special editions . We are celebrating our 90th anniversary this year. We've lots of new product ranges coming out this year, as we look forward to the next decade of ercol, but we felt we'd also like to mark the occasion with a few special pieces.

For our 90th anniversary we are issuing special versions of two of our Originals.

Our classic 0354 nest of tables, was designed by ercol's founder, Lucian Ercolani, in 1956. For our celebrations we are making two special versions of it. We've given it a playful makeover in an array of colours to create a fun flash of colour for the home. The large table is painted in teal, the medium table in coral and the small table in red ochre. We are also making a special edition with walnut table tops, instead of the normal elm. The rich dark colour of the walnut provides a striking contrast with the beech legs.

The butterfly chair was first launched in 1958 and was also designed by our founder, Lucian Ercolani. We are also issuing this in a walnut version as an anniversary special. Here, bent walnut plies replace the usual elm for the seat and back, and, as with the tables, you get an incredible contrast between the walnut and the beech of the legs and frame.

Milan Furniture Show. We were delighted to be asked to take part in 100% British Design at the Milan Furniture Show this April. Organised by the British Consulate in Milan, and hosted by design-lead Milan store la Rinascente, in the words of the Consulate it aimed to showcase "the best of British creativity and innovation." We had two sets of furniture on display. One comprised our love seat, classic Windsor chair and ever popular 354 "pebble" nest, along with a stacking chair, all shown in clear finish. The second set paired two butterfly chairs with our 2327 treviso occasional table, by renowned British designer Matthew Hilton.

The photograph shows HRH Duke of York admiring the ercol furniture, with (L to R) our chairman, Edward Tadros, Vittorio Radice, CEO of la Rinascente and Mr Borletti, President of la Rinascente. More images of the show are on our facebook and Flickr sites.

Act now, Think later! ercol has long worked closely with Bucks New University, our local university, which runs some of the few remaining furniture courses in the country. Recently we've been working with this year's MA students on the MA Furniture Design degree. In Act first, Think later, the students are given a tour of ercol's factory and showroom and then are asked to take those first impressions and react to what they see, feel, smell and think in the factory, and over a short period develop those impressions into creative ideas. In April 2010 the group gave a presentation to ercol on the project. We had an enjoyable and thought provoking session and thank the students for this. You can see pictures from the presentation on our Flickr site and Facebook page.

New this Easter - 2228 artisan hall table and desk. Our artisan range has proved very popular. Made from real oak at our Princes Risborough factory, the artisan range shows the beauty of solid wood, with its characteristic shapes and chamfers in the legs, drawers and doors to give a beautiful modern elegance to the range.

This Easter sees the addition of a new piece to the range. Our 2228 artisan hall table combines practicality with elegance. It is a hall table with a secret - it is also an extremely useful compact desk. The drawer under the desk is ideal for storing your laptop or keyboard - slide open the drawer and the hinged drawer-front can be lowered to provide a flat surface to type on. The back of the drawer also has a cut-out to take any cables.

New ercol studio at Hi-Sell Direct. Hi-Sell Direct is a family run business established over 25 years ago, trading from retail showrooms at St. Ives in Cambridgeshire and Gamlingay in Bedfordshire totalling over 50,000sq. ft.

ercol studios represent our premier presentations of ercol. We were delighted to create an ercol studio at the Gamlingay store towards the end of 2009, the success of which has been phenomenal. It was a natural progression to create a similar environment in St. Ives to showcase the beauty and diversity of ercol furniture. This new ercol studio is now open for viewing and they will be having their formal champagne launch over the Easter weekend.

Treviso desk at John Lewis. We're delighted that our treviso desk is now available through John Lewis. Designed by renowned British furniture designer, Matthew Hilton, and made in our Buckinghamshire factory from American oak, the treviso desk is a strikingly elegant, clean-lined design. The forward angled legs provide a unique silhouette to this piece, making it instantly recognisable. Two drawers provide storage for pens and pencils, whilst an under-drawer provides storage for a laptop.

Matthew Hilton was named British Designer of the year by Elle Decoration in 2008. Born in 1957, he studied at Portsmouth College of Art and then at Kingston Polytechnic. In 1985 he set up the Matthew Hilton Design Studio to work with a number of renowned manufacturers and retailers, including ercol.

You can see the Treviso desk at John Lewis stores in Oxford Street, Kingston, Bluewater, High Wycombe and at Peter Jones (Sloane Square).

Lucian Brett Ercolani DSO, DFC: 1917 - 2010 It is with great sadness that we have to tell you that Lucian Ercolani passed away on Saturday 13 February 2010, aged 92. Mr Lucian, as he was affectionately known to everyone at ercol, will be sorely missed.

The eldest son of ercol's founder, Mr Lucian joined the company in 1934 and in due course took up the reigns from The Old Man, Lucian Ercolani Senior, running the factory from the 1950s through to 1994. Even after this, Mr Lucian remained closely involved with the company.

Mr Lucian played an active role within the broader community, serving as Master of the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers, being a founder of the Radnage branch of the British Legion and a governor of the Bucks College of Higher Education, now the Bucks New University. Mr Lucian served in the RAF during the war, for which he was decorated. Mr Lucian was a keen sailor, sailing to various countries around the globe and also travelled widely for the business.

Our current Chairman, Edward Tadros, Mr Lucian's nephew, paid tribute to Mr Lucian:

"Lucian's life was a long catalogue of a remarkable and very full career. He was a great innovator in manufacturing which he combined with a deep interest in people and with great qualities of leadership. He was one of the truly great men of the post war furniture industry. It is indeed the passing of an era. I think the underlying theme of it all was his strength of leadership and character at every turn."

Our thoughts and condolences are with his family.

Electricity use reduced: We feel the environment comes naturally to ercol, with our long-lasting furniture made from wood in our energy efficient factory at Princes Risborough. However, since we moved into our new premises we have tried every year to reduce our energy consumption. Our heat and hot water are supplied from burning our wood waste in our biomass boiler, but we still have to use electricity to run our machinery and lighting (despite extensive use of natural daylight).

Well, we've just had our final bill in for last year and are pleased to say that in 2009 we managed to reduce our electricity consumption by a little over 10% compared to 2008. We are now looking into ways we can further reduce our consumption in 2010. After all, every little bit helps.

Manufacturing Guild Mark presentation: The Manufacturing Guild Mark, awarded by the Worshipful Company of Furniture Makers, is awarded as a mark of distinction to a select band of manufacturers, based on a range of criteria, which include a commitment to design, quality of making, efficiency of manufacturing, a concern for the environment, a commitment to training and above all that most of the Guild Mark holder's manufacturing is carried out in the UK.

Ercol are delighted to be holders of the Manufacturing Guild Mark in recognition of our work in these categories. On 26th January we were presented with our certificate for 2010 by Peter Kelsey, Master of the Worshipful Company, during a ceremony at Interiors 2010.

Puff and Flock at Designersblock: As well as our own, greatly enlarged, stand at Interiors 2010 this month, ercol have teamed up with avant garde textile designers Puff & Flock, who've taken classic ercol pieces and given them a twist, whether it be adding decorative steel grate panels between the slats of a Windsor chair in Twirl, a butterfly chair rendered in the pattern of our E360 fabric, in Carbon Copy Chair, or a Cyclopes version of the Studio couch in the Character Couch.

Puff and Flock will be showing their ercol pieces as part of the Designersblock stand at Interiors 2010. Interiors 2010 is open to the furniture trade from 24th - 27th January and takes place at the NEC Birmingham.

Sit down! Sit down: Seating for kids is a new exhibition at the V&A Museum of Childhood. The show features seating for children through the last four centuries, from school chairs to highchairs, saddles to potties, armchairs to swings. The exhibition takes inspiration from the Three Bears, with visitors entering through three different sized doors into the Three Bears' cottage. Visitors can vote for their favourite chair by placing spoons in porridge bowls.

ercol are delighted to be supporting this exhibition. We have worked with Furniture Design & Technology students from Bucks New University on a brief to develop a functional and original child's school chair for the show, providing an insight into the design process.

The Wallpaper ercol chair arch, first installed last September at the V&A as part of the London Design Festival, will be erected at the Museum of Childhood for this show.

ercol Wallpaper chair arch. In late Victorian times towns celebrated visits by major dignitaries through erecting an arch across the main street which was festooned with the main product of that city. In High Wycombe it was only natural that this would be a chair arch. The first major chair arch was built in 1877 to mark a visit by Queen Victoria. Local chairmaker Walter Skull was asked by the Council to organise this magnificent arch. Later his company would become part of ercol.

Design magazine Wallpaper decided to commission a modern reinterpretation of the chair arch for this year's London Design Festival and asked ercol to partner them - the result will be two spectacular overlapping arches of ercol's stacking chair in the central courtyard of the V&A museum, the John Madjeski garden, from September 19th to 27th

This unique week long exhibition is made up entirely of British designed and produced furniture, lighting, ceramics and textiles, as well as exclusive collaborations. This is particularly satisfying for us, since we exhibited at the original Britain Can Make It exhibition in 1946, from which this show takes its inspiration. There we showed what was to become our Windsor range - which is still going strong over half a century later.

Britain Can (Still) Make It will be taking place during the London Design Festival at Liberty from 19th - 27th September.
